Our Hints and Rules of Monogramming:
1. The order: The last initial goes in the middle, and is larger than
the other two.
2. For a bride and bridegroom: Traditionally, the monogram consists only of the woman's initials, with her new last-name initial in the middle, larger. But of course you could use his and her first initials and their last initial in the middle. Hadley: "Our opinion on the matter is that a man does not care at all about linens. Ignore him. But remember him at the bar. Monogram napkins, and engrave the glasses with his initials."
3. For children: Some people don't want the child's name on a sweater because of the risk of kidnapping.
4. For a newborn: People ask, "Should they include the middle name?" Well, if she's going to be called Elizabeth Grace, fine. But if she's going to be just Elizabeth, that's what goes on the pillow. And people always want to put the birth date on. Valerie: "I hate that. It junks up the pillow."
5. As an alternative to the three-letter initial, try a single letter with two dots on each side. It's modern and sleek and can be passed down to other people.
6. L, I, and K don't always look good large in the middle of a monogram. Instead, consider running the initials straight across, or use the last name.
7. To use a nickname or not? If you're doing a monogram, go with the legal name.
8. Break the rules: Don't feel you have to use initials. Put an address on a cocktail napkin. Or add the last name to a tote bag–then the whole family can use it.
